WEBENCH® Tools/TPS54620: Inductor part selection

Part Number: TPS54620

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

I have created a design using Webench, First I have selected switching frequency 200KHz, It suggests Inductor Value 4.5uH (Minimum) to 5.5uH (Maximum),

I can edit the lower Value 4.5uH to 1 uH and use 1uH part in Design, It updates the value a provides design File with similar characteristics.

Questions :-

1. Is it okay to use Inductor value  less then recommended Value?

2. When I change the Inductor Value less, Why tool did not give me error message or recalculate designs  based on new Inductor Value?

  • Generally speaking, lower value inductor will give higher peak to peak ac ripple current. Webench probably designs for 20 to 30% ripple current relative to the specified output current. Decreasing the inductor from 4.5 uH to 1 uH will increase ripple by a factor of 4.5 times. This may or nmay not be acceptable to you. The RMS losses and peak switch currents will be much higher. If you can post all your Webench inputs, I can try to re-create this.
