TPS717: Reverse current protection diode.

Part Number: TPS717
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2985, LP2985-N,

My application uses the TPS71733 to power an MCU. During MCU programming the MCU will be powered directly from the programmer, therefore the output of the regulator will see 3.3V from the programmer and the input will be at 0V.

Should I be using a reverse current protection diode similar to what is recommended for the LP2985? As shown on page 18 of the LP2985 datasheet  http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lp2985-n.pdf

Thank you,

Adam

  • Hi Adam,

Yes, similar to LP2985-N, TPS717 has a body diode that will conduct current when the output voltage exceeds the input voltage; however, the current is not limited through the body diode. We recommend external limiting of the current or using an external diode to provide a robust path for the reverse current similar to what is shown in Figure 24 of the LP2985-N datasheet. Keep in mind that the diode will protect the LDO; however, you may still need to provide protection for devices connected to the TPS717 input.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
