BQ24773: LiPo 4S charger/balancer IC selection

Part Number: BQ24773

Hi,

in our system we are using a 4S LiPo. I need to integrate a LiPo charger/balancer into the system.
Am I right that there is no IC which combines charger/balancer?

Specifications:

  • External power supply voltage is adjustable 0-30V
  • LiPo 4S -> 14,8V
  • The system shall be able to operate while the external power supply is connected/the battery is charged.
  • min charging current 1A
  • SMBUS/I2C Interface beneficial.

I went trough the device selector but I don't want to run into a redesign because I selected the wrong part, thus I am very interested in your opinion.

Regards
Thomas

  • Unfortunately, all of our battery chargers does not include cell balancing. You will need a gauge to achieve this.
    For all of your other requirements, the bq24773 is a good choice except the input power range.

    Obviously when VIN=0, the IC will not be able to charge the battery. When the input voltage is higher than 26V, the over-voltage protection kicks in and suspends charging.
    The abs input voltage max rating of the device is 30V if this is what you mean.
