BQ40Z60: To know whether bq40z60 can be used for a Li ion polymer battery pack system with 2 serial cells

Part Number: BQ40Z60

I am using a Li ion polymer battery pack system with 2 serial cells. The pack has three terminals - pack+ pin, pack- pin and NTC pin. Individual cell terminals are not accessible.

My question: whether can I use bq40z60 for this configuration? If yes, what limitations I will have in the design.

  • Hi,

The issue here is you won't be able to balance them without access to individual cells or a balancing plug.

For most cases you should balance the cells to prevent any chance of damage to the pack from overcharge. But it seems like you could possibly get away with charging without balancing if the charging rate is kept lower than 0.5C as a lower charge rate gives them time to self balance on their own. The cell balancing circuitry can be enabled or disabled via the CELL_BAL_DET[CB3, CB2, CB1] control register.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi,
I have a very similar problem; I too are using the bq40z60 and have a 3 cell lithium ion battery with three terminals; NTC; -ve; and +ve.
    What should I do with the VC1, VC2, VC3 & VC4 on the chip [ 1P, 2P, 3P & 4P] on the evaluation board.
And will the chip perform adequately in this configuration?
Thank you in advance for any help or advice you may be able to give me.
    Kind Regards
