BQ27220: Regarding Quick start guidelines

Part Number: BQ27220
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, GPCCEDV

Hi  Team,

We are  using Bq27220 in one of our application,  I am  getting confused from the links provided in the datasheet, all these  links  refer to Impedance track part, but Bq27220 is CEDV based  gauge

As per my  understanding, i have to do at least following steps in order to get gauge working

 A) update parameters in RAM as per my battery and upload the various log file in GPC calculator for getting Compensated End of Discharge Voltage (CEDV) coefficients.

B) Then I will  get the nearest profile parameters which have to be programmed  in OTP  memory

Now  I have  following questions

1) Does my understanding is correct?

2)  What are  the minimum parameters which have to be updated before  taking logs.

3)What are the data I will get after uploading log files?

  • Hi Abhishek,
Your understanding is correct, please refer to bq27220EVM user guide, attached below, for more information on how to setup bq27220 CEDV gauge. Please don not hesitate to post any question or questions you may still have.

  • Hi Haidar,

Thanks for update. Please let me know what are the data i will get after submitting the file ? . I am asking these because as per my undestanding i will get some parametres which has to be updated through bqstudio and then i have to create a golden image file, that golden image file has to be flashed through smart RF flasher .

So what are the those parameters which will be update after submitting log files? Does we need to update all parameters before taking logs?
  • Hi Haider , please kindly update if I need to update all parameters before taking logs ,also can you refer me some documents which tells me detailed functional working of cedv based gas gauge
  • Hi Abhishek,

After submitting the six log files along with config.txt file to our GPCCEDV tool you will getting an email with a report containing CEDV parameters you need to set in bq27220 data memory then your gauge can accurately gauge your battery. Please find attached sample report similar to what you wold get:

    GPC_input_data_good-report_sample.zip

The report will have two txt files; first is GPC_CEDV.txt where you will find calculated CEDV parameters, second is OCV11.txt where you will find calculated SOC % vs batter voltage. These calculated parameters need to be updated in bq27220 data memory, please find screen shots of where you can find such parameters:

Remember to send UNSEAL then UNSEAL_FULL_ACCESS commands before updating data memory parameters and after finished updating parameters please send ENTER_CFG_UPDATE then EXIT_CFG_UPDATE commands for updates to take place.

    Regards,

    Haidar

  • hi haidar,

If my customer is using the host system calibration method, that means they used an external MCU to update the configuration via I2C bus as explained in application example in chapter 6 (pg65/88) of TRM (SLUUBD4- Apr 2016). Does that enough? is that all they need to do or they still need to go through the steps to generate the golden file?

    Best regards,
    kpk
  • Hi kpk,
Thank you for your question, one of our apps engineer in battery gauges will answer you question asap since I have rotated to another team.

  • A golden file is still needed.
    thanks

  • hi Onyx,

Thx for reply. since the end customer do not want to program the OTP. so what should we do after generating the golden file? do we use the external MCU to write to golden file to any specific location, any guideline?

    Best regards,
    kpk

  • Hi Kpk,
Use the gmfs to write your configuration to ROM.Note that the memory is volatile, so should power be cut off, you will have to reload your file back on the device. See appendix B of the TRM below:

  • i Onyx,

I had help the end cust to generated the GG file and ask them to use their host MCU to program everything via I2C. However, the end cust mentioned the this is very tedious, and what they request for is just to change 1 or 2 registers in order to update the design capacity register to support 13200mAH. Can I check will that be possible? if yes, what is the procedure?

  • Hi Kpk,
Programming the gauge using the flashstream file is the recommended procedure for mass production. While in the field , the customer needs to periodically store parameters that get updated alongside their parameters from the golden file which should get programmed back on the gauge should the gauge for some reason loose power.

Link to an app note useful for programming the gauge below.

    thanks
