BQ40Z50-R1: Regarding Qmax update and LiFePO4 chemistry

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQ4050,

I am planning to use bq40z50 for my application which consists of continuous charge and discharge with very little or no rest periods.

1) If I do the Qmax learning process once during production phase (ie almost nil Qmax updates on field), is it okay ?

2) I have been using LiCoO2 during testing phase. Now I have decided to change over to LiFePO4 chemistry. Is there any additional steps/modifications required other than changing the voltage or temperature parameters in data flash ??

  • Hi Venugopal,

    1.  bq4050, which is a CEDV gauge and works well for applications where the battery is charged to full and discharge down to empty.
    2. You will also need to update the chemID  to match the new cell chemistry.

  • Hi Damian,

I think the customer is using the bq40z50-R1 which is an IT gauge.

    Hi Venugopal,

    1. A successful (optimization) learning cycle should be performed so that Qmax and the Ra Tables get updated. Performing a successful learning cycle only needs to be done once.

    2. I think you should be fine in terms of data flash parameter since they're typically default for Lithium-Ion batteries. But you will need to program a new CHEM_ID for your new battery.

    Hope this helps,
