BQ76PL536A-Q1: Solar charge controller and battery monitoring for 4s30p Li-ion 18650 cell battery pack?

Part Number: BQ76PL536A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76920, BQ76925, BQ24650, , BQ76PL536A

Hi all,
Thanks for replying!
Sorry I wasn't clear the first time.

My requirements: charge (at 0.5C) Li-ion battery pack using a solar panel,

and discharge (at 0.3C) the battery pack with a load. A suitable cost effective solution is needed!

Battery pack: 4s30p configuration of 18650 cells of 1000mAh capacity each.

Short listed IC for solar charge controller with MPPT:

BQ24650 but it has max. charge current = 10A, I need a 15A charge current! (charging at 0.5C)

1. Is the selection of charge controller for above battery pack configuration suitable?

2. Any other alternative for 15A charge current solar charge controller with MPPT?

3. Dose this IC support simultaneous charge and discharge of Li-ion battery pack?

For battery monitoring (4s30p 18650 cell pack):

Shortlisted three ICs:

BQ76920 BQ76925 BQ76PL536A BQ76PL536A-Q1

4. Which among them is the most suitable for the above configuration of battery pack and charge controller?

5. Do I need to consider any other parameters for selection of battery monitoring IC?

6. Can these battery monitoring ICs suitable to monitor 4s30p battery pack?

7. How is behavior of the battery monitor IC when it is monitoring a 4s30p configuration of 18650 cells?

8. What could be the best suitable microcontroller for the above battery monitoring ICs?

My application is not automotive

Kindly guide me in this regard.

Thanks and regards.

  • Hi Swaroop,

    1. what is your application? Pl536a is right choice for automotive. If not automotive then TI has other products that may be better for you.

    2. For pl536A, check for minimal operating voltage. That's all you need for PL536A. Check for ADC input range.

    3. Again, PL536A is right choice for automotive application. If not then check out bq76920 or bq76925

    4. It's not charger IC. It's charging/discharging rate for component selections.

  • IF you are only care for monitoring then PL536A will do that.
IF you need extra features like current sensing, FET controller then PL536A is not a fit.
Perhaps, bq76925 may be fit for you.
  • Thanks Roger Hwang,

I definitely need extra protection, complete monitoring and protection!

    Q. I hope BQ76925 is suitable for monitoring a 4s30p 18650 cell battery pack configuration?

I will consider BQ76925. At present BQ76925 looks promising and seems to address some of my concerns.

I shall post my quarries if any, in the future.

I wish you a pleasant weekend.

    Thanks and regards.
