bq51050b: Receiver COIL will be suitable?

Part Number: bq51050b

We are using TI part bq51050b and would like to know below Receiver COIL will be a suitable?

Receiver COIL  spec:
Manufacturer Part Number: 760308103206
Digi-Key Part Number :732-6211-ND
Description: RX 1 COIL 1 LAYER 7.5UH 1.55A
Inductance : 7.5µH
DC Resistance (DCR) = 340 mOhm
Q @ Freq = 16 @ 125kHz
Current Rating = 1.55A
Current - Saturation = 3A
Frequency - Self Resonant = 23MHz
Size / Dimension = 1.10" L x 0.59" W x 0.03" H (28mm x 15.0mm x 0.7mm)

Regards,

Girish

  • Hi Girish
The inductance of 7.5uH is low and this will show up as difficulty starting with increased coil to coil distance, height or X & Y. The coil is also on the physically small side, normally will require higher L to offset the poor coupling you will have with small coils.

It would work if you will always have good alignment and output current is low.
  • Hi Bill,
    Thank you for your response.
We are using Rechargeable Lithium Ion Polymer Battery Pack 3.7 V, 165mAh.

With the RX coil "RX 1 COIL 1 LAYER 7.5UH 1.55A" how long it would take to charge the full battery? If the alignment is good.

    Thanks,
    Girish.
  • The coil is only part of the system and it is difficult to predict the total system performance after looking at only one part.
It may be helpful if you look at TIDA-00318 reference design. This is a low power battery charger solution. It may be a good starting point for your design.
