TPS56C215: Solder mask details of Land Pattern

Part Number: TPS56C215

Hi,

I have questions about Solder mask details of Land Pattern in datasheet.
Datasheet recommends to use NSMD pad for power pin and SMD pad for signal pin.

Q1: Why is TPS56C215 recommended the two case of solder mask defined?
Q2: Can we use NSMD pad for power pin?

Best regards,
Shimizu

  • Hi Shimizu,

Please look at the third last page of the datasheet,  it recommends to use SMD pad for power pin(pads 2-11 are power pad).

1, SMD can support heavier power stress and isn't easy to drop.

2, TPS56C215 can output 12A current. So it's better to use SMD for power pin.

    best regards.

  • Hi Edwin,

    Thank you for reply.
    I mistook the following sentence.
Incorrect(previous post): Datasheet recommends to use NSMD pad for power pin and SMD pad for signal pin.
Correct: Datasheet recommends to use SMD pad for power pin and NSMD pad for signal pin.

    and I re-ask you.

Can we use NSMD pad for power pin?
My customer wants to use NSMD for power pin.
If we use NSMD pad for power pin, what happens?

    Best regards,
    Shimizu
  • Hi Shimizu,

You can also use NSMD for power pin. But please place wider line for power pin.

I'll double check the question with footprint team and reply you as soon as possible.

    best regards.

  • Hi Shimizu,

The reason we recommended SMD for this package are:
    1. SMD pad provide a more accurate soldering pad area. (Most PCB house have over etch issue during PCB fabrication end up smaller solder pad size).
    2. The larger metal area provide better thermal performance. This is particular important for power devices. The larger metal area provide a better thermal performance especially for power devices.

So, it 's recommended strongly to use SMD for power pin.

    best regards
