LM2592HV: Capacitor selection

Part Number: LM2592HV

Hi,

Greetings of the day!!!

We are designing circuit for automobile application and selected LM2592 switcher for this application. The input supply voltage range is 18V-32V DC and output voltage we are expecting 5V/1A max.

In typical application circuit it is mentioned that the required capacitor should be have low ESR and it may be aluminum or tantalum bypass capacitor with value of 680uF.

Can we use ceramic capacitors with 22uF capacitance and 50v Voltage rating in automobile application considering Load dump effect in car/bus battery supply.

Please advice.

Regards,

Paddy

  • A 22uF input cap is somewhat too small for this device since the switching frequency is rather low.  I would prefer to see

at least 100uF.  Also, an aluminium or tant. will provide some ESR to damp any ringing on the input that may be cuased

by inductance in you input supply.  In any case you must test your design carefully since we have not testing this device

with ceramic capacitors on the input.
