BQ24295: BQ24295: Finding the right part

Part Number: BQ24295
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24297

Customer Question:

I’m considering using the BQ24295 in a product. The product requirements:

1)     Single cell, 18650 Li-Ion battery

2)     Charged via USB micro B connector. I would like to utilize the USB charging port detection features:

a.      USB Host or Charging Port D+/D– Detection Compatible to USB Battery Charger Spec (BC1.2)

b.      Support Non-Standard 2-A/1-A Adapters Detection

3)     Charging will likely be 1A rate or less.

4)     Standalone operation is desired, but I2C is also fine.

Ideally I’d like the simplest and lowest cost solution that meets the above requirements. To me that looks like the BQ24295. Do you have any other parts that I should be considering?

Also, can you tell me what the difference between the BQ24295 and BQ24297 is?

  • Hello Laura,

The bq24295 is a good alternative considering these requirements. The 295 is a host controlled charger that can also operate in standalone mode using the default values. The default charge current is 1A and default charge voltage is 4.2V. If the customer intends on using the 295 in standalone mode, please verify the default values fit the cell's parameters. We have cheaper standalone solutions, but the cheapest with D+/D- detection is the bq24295.

The difference between the bq24295 and 297 are some default parameter values differ, in particular the default charging current (1A on the 295 vs. 2A on 297) and the VINDPM threshold (4.76V on 295 vs. 4.36V on 297).
