TPS62172: Pin Configuration Discrepancy in Data Sheet

Part Number: TPS62172

By convention, IC pins are numbered and identified counter-clockwise around the part from pin #1, as viewed from above.  However, in the TPS6217x data sheet's "Typical Application Schematic" on the first page and in Figures 7, 34, and 35, the pins are depicted different positions from the "Pin Configuration and Functions" shown in section 6.

This is misleading, and nearly caused me to build the CAD part incorrectly.

The schematic and figures should be re-drawn to be consistent with the actual pin configuration and prevent confusion.

  • I am sorry that this caused confusion. I agree to you that there is a convention for pin numbering for packages which is similar to numbering the terminals of schematic symbols. But there is a difference between schematic symbols and package drawings. A terminal in a schematic symbol is not necessarily at the same position as the corresponding pin of the package. This for example allows using the same schematic symbol for different package options or just design schematic symbols in a way which enable drawing schematics which are easier to read.
For that reason all CAD tools I know have means of mapping terminals of schematic symbols to corresponding pins of the package. The information required to do the mapping correctly is always in the datasheet, in case of TPS62172 it is in section 6.
