BQ25120: VIN/PMID Configuration question..

Part Number: BQ25120

Hello there,

I have a customer using this device in their system. In the functional block, the only thing separating PMID and VIN is a FET. The customer was wondering if there is any (un-shown) boost regulation circuitry between those two pins and would like to know the consequences of connecting them externally (as PMID is shown as an I/O on the datasheet)?

Would this just bypass battery supplement mode or would there be other effects?

Thanks for your time,

-Amanda

  • Hello Amanda,

PMID is an unregulated load pin which can supply up to 300mA. Connecting this to VIn would bypass the input FET that is used for protection and high-Z mode.

Your BAT and VIn would also connected directly through the Battery FET (Q7).

    Regards,

    David

  • Hi Amanda,

What is the reason behind tying VIN to PMID?

PMID and VIN should not externally tied together.

This will bypass the input current monitoring, which will affect VINDPM and ILIM.

Also, if any load is on PMID it will no longer be protected from an over voltage condition because PMID is externally connected to VIN.

Also, this may keep the device from being in Active battery/ supplement mode.
