BQ24600: IC getting damaged

Hello,

I am using bq24600 for charging Li-Ion battery pack of 4S-2P configuraion. However, I am unable to charge it when the pack is fully discharged. The actual problem where I stuck was IC getting damaged while connecting battery pack to the terminals. Following are the testing conditions.

1. Input supply voltage from regulated power supply is at 24 V.

2. Battery pack voltage is around 15V.

3. I started the circuit (same as in application note of bq24600) by giving 24 V from RPS and then I switched on MCB so that the battery pack is connected at the output terminals.

Here the problem comes, as soon as I switch on MCB then IC is getting damaged. I have observed some spark and fumes coming out from IC pins.

Can you please help me out where I am doing wrong while testing the circuit.

Hello,

Is the charge process normal when you don't connect your battery with your terminals? what's you terminal, what's the resistance and current?

Hi,
Its not normal. When I don't connect battery the IC will detectit as no battery connected. In fact it will charge only when battery is present so I am restricted to connect a R load across terminals.

Hello,

when you connect the battery with the charger, charge process is normal, so the problem is your load. You need to check if your load is right.

Also, BQ24610 is a charger with power path. With BQ24610, you can separate your load with the battery.

Hi Kerry,
I didn't get how the charge process is normal ? Here the load is battery pack itself and it is at 15 V. So I don't think battery pack is the problem. Can you please elaborate your explanation regarding BQ24600 because I am charging the battery by using the same IC.

what's your main issue now? And could you give me some necessary test data and test waveform for analysis.
