Yes, you can use a different FET if you would like. If your application isn't automotive you do not need to use a Q grade device. Either way you can select a different FET. Just be careful of thermals if you use a higher Rds(on) and make sure the gate charge is low enough for the switching frequency you use (Ivcc=Qg*Fsw) so that you do not current limit VCC.

Hello Henry,
If you do not need fast PWM dimming (>250Hz or so) you can get rid of Q1, Q2, R2, R5, and D2. You can still PWM dim without them but the edges will be much slower so you need to use a lower PWM frequency if you want a large linear range.
