TPS7A7100: thermal info

Part Number: TPS7A7100

Hi,

Thermal Information for TPS7A7100RGT specifies ThetaJA = 44.6 degC/W & ThetaJC= 54.3degC/W.

This information doesn't seem to be correct.

Please clarify how ThetaJA is less than ThetaJC.

Is it a typo or wrong assumption in modelling?

Regards,

Chetan

  • Chetan,

The parameter ThetaJC(TOP) = is the thermal impedance from the die to the top of the package. It assumes that the heat flow would only be through the top of the package, not through the board. I agree that if we were looking at the ThetaJC to the bottom of the case, where the exposed pad is, it would need to be lower than ThetaJA, because the thermal impedance from the die to the board would add to the thermal impedance from the board to ambient to create ThetaJA. However, for ThetaJC(TOP), that is not the case.

    Regards,
    Mike
