BQ24610EVM: Battery Wont Charge

Below are the voltage measured by using digital multi-meter on respective pins of BQ24610-evm with external power applied.

VCC=12.15V

PG=0V.

REGN=6V

STAT 1 -3.4V

STAT 2-3.4V

VFB=.934V

CE-3.28V

ACDRV-7.2V

BATTDRV-9.28V

BATTERY WILL POWER THE SYSTEM IF EXTERNAL POWER IS DISCONNECTED THOUGH THE SYSTEM WILL NOT CHARGE THE BATTERY.

This is correct since we need to maintain system power with or without external power(adapter).

"THOUGH THE SYSTEM WILL NOT CHARGE THE BATTERY"
I got a little confusing on it. Your question is about non-charging or something else?

The system will not charge the battery at all.

Hi Brett,

You can refer to datasheet "Enable/Disable Charging" section. You can see charging would be enabled only when the external power is present. So if external power is absent, system would not charge battery. It is normal phenomenon.

The system does not charge the battery when external power is connected. I don't believe we are on the same page here.

any help would be greatly appreciated. The system does not enable charging while external power is applied.

Hi Brett,

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Since system would not be a source, I thought you're talking system would power the battery.

According to your measurement, /PG low presents charger is not in sleep mode, UVLO and ACOV. ACDRV and BATDRV seems like they work normally. Could you help me to check on the TS pin. Is that any TS fault occurred in your test?

ts pin is reading 5.2V

Hi Brett,

TS pin voltage determines battery temperature. You can refer to temperature section in datasheet. If VTS is over VLTF(73.4% VREF, VREF=3.3V), charging would be suspended. Could you please check if your battery or something wrong to cause this temperature fault?

Hi Brett,

Sorry, VLTF is 73.5% VREF. Did you connect battery TS to EVM board or just apply one voltage on it?

The battery does not have a temperature sensor attached so nothing is connected to the TS circuit

I connected a 5V load to the ts pin which I just removed and it is now reading 3.2V

Hi Brett,

Please add one voltage divider(10kohm/10komh) from VREF to TS to GND to make VTS=1/2 VREF. It could let charger determine battery is in a good temperature. Charging would be continued.
