Hot swap controller

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5069

Hi,

I am looking for a hot swap controller which should working around 50V.

Enable High to GATE High time i want within 1us.

Output of the MOSFET i should get within 1us

Please suggest a part for the same.

  • Hi murugan,

Welcome to E2E! For a high voltage hot swap controller, I would recommend the LM5069. Unfortunately, I believe the gate cannot go high within a 1us. There are several variables that determine how quickly the output can charge up (Cout, FET SOA, Sourcing gate current, etc.). 1us is extremely fast and depending on VIN, Current, and output Cap, this might be too much energy for any particular FET to handle.  For comparison, usually, the fast trip shutdown for the FET (during a short-circuit), is around 1us or so.

My recommendation is to use our easy-to-use calculator tool for this device to help you determine the most robust design. You can find it by going to www.ti.com/hotswap ==> click on “Tools & software” ==> then click on “Hot Swap design calculator tools”

For help on filling out the excel spreadsheet, we have video tutorials. They explain how to enter the correct values cell by cell. The videos are at www.ti.com/hotswap ==> Click on “Support & Training” tab.

Also, If the customer would like a detailed explanation on all of the equations and methodologies behind the calculator tool, please go to our app note at www.ti.com/hotswap ==> Click on “Technical Documents” ==> Click on “Robust Hot Swap”. It goes step by step to explain what the SOA/PLIM means and how it’s calculated.  I hope this helps.

  • Dear Aramis,
    Thank you for your feedback.
If you have any other parts
or alternate solution to achieve this please provide your feedback.

  • Hi Murugan,

The LM5069 is probably the best high voltage hotswap controller in our portfolio. Turning on in 1us might not be likely for any of our devices (reasons stated above this thread). I would advise using the calculator tool with this device, which will help calculate the typical start time depending on your applications operating conditions.

  • Dear Aramis,
    Thank you for your feedback.

For LM5069 Can you please suggest a MOSFET
    Load is 50V,2A
  • Hi Murugan,

No problem at all. Before I recommend a FET, I have two questions for you:

    1) Do you happen to know what the value of the output capacitance is for this application?

    2) What is the value of the ambient temperature?

These two questions will help me recommend the suitable FET :-)
