BQ78Z100EVM-532: Used to work, now it doesn't

Using Battery Management Studio 1.3.72.

Used to be able to see Battery Icon and voltage.

Now Data Memory tab Read All returns;

"Unable to communicate with device : Ensure communications adaptor is connected and not in use. Check connection to device."

then;

"Operation failed because initial read of all data flash failed."

Have re-seated all connectors. No change.

Hi John

You will need to make sure your EVM is still functional.
If somehow you had put it into shutdown, you will need to wake it up by pressing the wake up button or applying a charge voltage to pack + and pack-
Also, try disconnecting and reconnecting your set up

Onyx,

Disconnected, reconnected, +8.18VDC on pack+/pack-, pressed button, same results.

Also have bq28z610EVM-532. Same procedure, same results.

Hi John,

Are you saying that you are totally unable to communicate with the device anymore? Can you try downgrading your bqstudio software to v 1.3.52 from ti.com to see if the problem persists. I have never experienced that on my board and my bqstudio version is an earlier version, v.1.3.61.

I have 1.3.54 which returns "No acknowledge from device." when Registers is selected.

perhaps you have the gauge in ROM mode.... try programming the srec ...if it starts programming, then it means you were in ROM mode.. make sure to click the execute button after programming to exit ROM into firmware mode.

I actually had it working yesterday, but then it stopped working again today. I noticed that the EV2300 HPA002 with the USB connected and all outputs disconnected has a voltage on HDQ VCC to GND of 3.28 V, whereas I2C VOUT to GND is 0.01 V. Maybe I have a bad EV2300?

Hi Dave
Are you using the onboard EVM pull -ups? The I2C ports of the ev2300 doesn't have internal pull ups. Also are you using the gauge in 1s or 2s configuration?

The bq78z100 comes in I2C state and only after you are done configuring your system should you put the gauge in hdq.

Don't know about the pull-ups, but I am using 2S1P.
I'm having success by being careful about the hook-up order;
1. USB from laptop to EV2300
2. 4-pin connector from EV2300 to bq28z610EVM532
3. Battery 1N then 1P then 2P
4. Push S1
Seems to functioning correctly now. I've gone through discharge and recharge cycles.
