bq40z50-R1: LTO battery charger and gas gauge

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24725A, BQ4050

Hi,

We are developing a charging system and are looking for a solution to charge a LTO battery (lithium titanate) with 4 serie cells, these batteries have a low charging voltage: 2.8V and nominal voltage: 2.4V. We thought to use the bq40z50-R1 as a gas gauge for the battery and the bq24725A as charger, but we are not sure if those components are compatible whith the LTO battery requirements, is it possible to charge the battery? On other forums we read that those components are not able to balance LTO cells. If those components are not compatible, which are compatible?

Thanks!

  • Hi Jan,
pls post your charger related questions to the charger forums.

For gauging Lithium titanate, the bq40z50-R1 should be compatible. is there a special criteria for balancing Li-titanate? Our gauges carry out balancing based on battery capacity on not based cell voltage.

    thanks
    Onyx
  • Thanks for the reply,

in this thread:   someone also asked about a gas gauge and balancing and there was the answer that TI doesn't have cell balancing devices for LTO batteries

  • While the gauges utilizing Impedance Track technology (such as bq40z50-R1/R2) balance based on cell capacity, the devices utilizing CEDV technology (such as bq4050) balance based on voltage.  I don't know of any experience trying either of these with LTO cells, but I expect one should be applicable, if not both.
