Led Matrix Driver for 5V LEDs ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92662-Q1

Hello,

I am looking for a LED Matrix driver that can drive LEDs that are specified for 5V power.  Do you know if any of the TI chips are capable of this?  I am looking for a matrix of 50 LEDs, each of which require 5V.

Thanks,

Stephen

  • Hello Stephen,

The TPS92661 and TPS92662 are matrix managers that can handle 5V LEDs. You would need multiple for 50 LEDs but it can be done.

    Clint

  • Hello Clinton. I have an application I believe either of the two devices you mentioned above could work for. I am curious though if the device registers can be setup so that we can flash or strobe the LEDs - on time is 100mS, off time is 1400ms (7% duty cycle). Also, I requested a full data sheet for the 92662 part but have not received it, can I get one please (full datasheet is not available online)?
  • Hello Terry,

They will do any profile you send to them via an MCU so strobing is no problem. As for the datasheet I do not have it available and the person who fulfills requests is out at the moment so perhaps that is why they haven't responded. But I can send a message to them asking about it, is the request under the same name as your post?

    Thanks,

    Clint

  • Hi Clinton, yes request is under same name, Thank you! Form the datasheet for the 92661 I gather the maxcimum LED voltage it can handle is 6 V, typical 5V. However it is unclear from the feature sheet for the 92662 what the max LED voltage is as it indicates up to 20V per switch? Can you shed some light on the max LED voltage for the '2' part? Thank you!
  • Hello Terry,

You are correct, the abs max is 20V per switch. I believe the OVP detection could be as low as 16.2V, so you may want to stay below that to avoid issues. I can't guarantee anything on the datasheet since I do not control that, but I will forward this to the right person.

    Best regards,

    Clint

  • Hello Terry,

I'm not sure what may have happened but I was told that they didn't see a request under your name. I'm not sure what criteria they used when gating content but they said you should try the request again since that is the start of the process. Good luck!

    Regards,

    Clint

  • Hi Clint, I have done this request twice in the past week, both times I get an acknowledgment saying my request was successfully submitted. Please put me int touch directly with the correct person for this. Thank you.
  • To follow this up, I resubmitted for again a third time and for the third time received the following;

Not sure what is going on at your system request end, suspect my requests are getting lost......
  • Hello Terry,

Sorry for all of the confusion. But I have confirmed that the correct folks have received your request so they are reviewing it. They actually got the original one, I just wasn't able to confirm that yesterday. The two people that review the requests were both out for a few days so that might explain the delay. Thanks for your patience.

  • HI Clinton, In my application I need to drive an LED with up to 15.5 Volts. It does not look like the TPS92661-
Q1 can do that, it is limited to about 5.5 Volts. What is the max LED voltage and current the TPS92662-Q1 can drive per channel?
  • Hello Terry,

The recommended operating ratings for LEDx to LEDx-1 for the TPS92662 are 16.2V and 1.25A max. So it has higher voltage switches than the TPS92661. I hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Clint

  • Terry, I received your request.  I will separately email you as this is a gated device and not supported through our E2E portal.
