We are working on a solution for high voltage charger. The evaluation board (HPA603) will be released soon.
It uses a bq24610 to do the charging control. There are few other circuits around charger IC: 8.6V bias supply using TPS54060; half bridge driver UCC27201; high voltage current sense INA169.
The attached file is a preliminary HPA603 use's guide. It includes sch. BOM, PCB...
Leethal,
You might look at the bq78PL114 / bq76102 chip set for your application. This is not a stand alone solution, but it will manage charge of 8 cells, and includes gas gauging and cell balancing. Further, the bq78PL114 8S EVM is currently available.

Hi,
We are using a battery which has an interal protection /cell balancing board/ with the 8 series cells in a fibreglass tube. It only has the positive and negative coming out on a lead to a power connector. Unfortunately your suggestion won't help but thank you for your input.
Lee.
