LMR16006: Cause for broken

Part Number: LMR16006

Hi,

Can LMR16006 be broken by small(15nF) boot strap capacitor?

I and my customer are considering for the cause of broken.

Best Regards,

Kuramochi

  • I don't think low boot cap will damage the part, but 15nF is too samll, it will turn off the high side FET when the CB to SW pin voltage is below 3 V no matter what's the value of the D (the detail you can refer to the section 8.3.2 in the datasheet). So if your convert has a big D, an enough cap is needed.

Furthermore, the voltage rate of  the cap must have the margin, 16V is enough.

  • To add to what Vental has to say:
Yes 15nF is too small because 100nF is recommended. There is the possibility of damage from too small Cb if this could happen from overheating of the internal N-Channel MOSFET. As the Boot voltage declines during the On-Time the MOSFET RDSon is higher than it would be with the correct value so die dissipation is high. One would expect a thermal shut-down action but such internal circuitry would have been evaluated and validated with the correct values installed.
