BQ40Z60EVM-578: Terminate Charge With Load Attached

Hello,

I am testing out the functionality of the bq40z60 when charging while a load is attached. At first it is working as I expect, the current is what I expect for the load and it charges to the correct voltage. However, the current is taking a very long time to decrease around 250 mV. Without the load it takes about 3 hours to decrease to 65 mV and with the load it took 3.5 hours to end at 258 mV. I was just wondering if anyone had some thoughts as to why this is happening.

    Hi Adam,
    Do you mean the current is taking a long time to decrease to "250mA" and not "250mV"?

    With the charger supplying the load and the battery, it is expected behavior to take a long time to go below your taper.

    Ha yes, that is exactly what I meant I don't know what my brain was thinking. Thank you for your response I'm going to keep it on the charger today so hopefully it will eventually get there

    So I've been playing with it a little more and it seems like having the load on is actually making the current higher than it would be if it is disconnected. This doesn't really make any sense to me because I was expecting the current to be lower after supplying the load. The load takes up about 390 mA. I was able to find a TI doc here http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva166/slva166.pdf talking about issues with li-ion loads but from what I can tell it isn't relevant to this charger. I'm going to be playing with it some more but any other ideas would be helpful.

    Here is a log and the screenshot of it explaining it a little:

    Red - FET_EN is low, CHGR_EN is high

    Blue - FET_EN is high, CHGR_EN is high

    Green - No load and FET_EN is low, CHGR_EN is high

    Yellow - No load and FET_EN is high, CHGR_EN is high

    hi Adam,

    If you have the load and the battery connected to the charger, They are both loads on the charger. The charger is expected to both charge the battery and power the load so an increased current is expected.

    I was under the impression that this current is the current for the battery only, so why would it pick up current from when the FET_EN is low? I am starting to think it has to do with the current sense itself. It will stay at 233 mA for hours and not decrease. I have not yet been able to get it even close to the threshold current.

    Hi Adam,
    That is a limitation of the device. There is an offset current due to a ground shift on the SRN pins such that when the fets are turned off, and the load is drawing current, even though there is no current through the gauge sense resistor, the offset causes the gauge to read a current. That is why we disabled qmax updates in the charge direction for this device. We actually verified what you are seeing on a board.

    Well that is good to know thank you. However, I'm still stuck on this taper current. Does that mean that the taper current will not go to the expected value? Should I change the taper current so I can get the FC bit to set? If so, is there a way to calculate what the new taper current should be or just trail and error?

    With that offset current, that is what it means. You will have to increase the taper current to allow FC flag to get set. Depending on the capacity of your battery, i would recommend a taper between c/10 and C/20. Taper is pretty much a variable you set based on your choice and how well you want your battery to be fully charged.
