bq28z610: Charge and Discharge FETs disabled by default?

Part Number: BQ28Z610

Hello,

I am somewhat confused by the default behavior of this part. By default,am I correct in saying the FET action is disabled? I am using the eval board and after much work I managed to get the two FETS enabled. What confuses me is that if these two FETs are disabled by default, the battery in the circuit would be disconnected from its load, which in a typical situation could be a host MCU. If in this case the host MCU can never power on to program the registers on the bq28z610, how is the system supposed to start without pre-programming the bq28z610 when populating the board? Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Kilian

  • Hi Kilian,
The device default firmware comes with the fets turned off. You have to turn them on using the fet enable command and then they stay on. After you extract your golden srec from a unit with the fets on, and you program on other devices, the fet will be on and you do not need to have them enabled again.

    thanks
