LM5170-Q1: Energy transfer device

Part Number: LM5170-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5170

I have been tasked with creating a converter which can transfer all the energy from one storage device to another.

The full storage device has a voltage range of 18V when full to 6V when empty

the target device has a terminal voltage of 0V when empty and 18V when full (so needs CCCV control)

I need a transfer current of 50A or more.

The demo board looks very interesting but I'm unsure if it can do what I need.

I don't need isolation or bidirectional.

Thanks

  • The LM5170 can do buck in one direction and boost in the other direction, but not buck and boost in one direction. You requirement is not very clear to me even though you said it is unidirectional. Is your input is always higher than the output, or your input always lower than the output? If you input can be higher or lower than the output, we would like to recommend a two stage in cascade connection, to always obtain an regulated output no matter whether the input is higher or lower. CC can always be achieved but controlling ISETA pin.
  • Thank you for the reply, you are right, I was being a little vague both sides of the converter are above and below each at various times.

I thought this converter would not be suitable but my problem remains, I am currently using a four switch controller from another manufacturer which I am scaling up to the power required however this device looked promising at first.

I have very little time to come up with a solution, I note your suggestion of using two converters in cascade but this is likely to be too big and complex compared with my other solution.
