BQ25703A: battery protection

Dear sir,

I used the BQ25703A for power bank design. I notice that there are lot of protection functions for the battery. Does it need other battery protection chip such as bq297xx series in the real design?

  • bq297x controls back to back FETs. It can prevent over charge or over discharge. I would like to have it as primary protection.  bq25703A cannot block the over discharge current. For example: system short with battery only, the current can go through the BATFET's body diode, even the bq25703A FET is off.

    OK, I see.

    Here is another question. The BQ297x has the back to back FETs, the BQ25703 has the battery MOSFET. Now BQ297x can provide the enough protection, can the BQ25703 MOSFET be saved? You know, the more MOSFET in power line will cause more efficiency loss. And the MOSFET is big, it needs more PCB area while the PCB area and heat are very critical in Power bank application.

  • The BATFET can also work in LDO mode to control the pre-charge current if the battery voltage too low. I am not sure bq297x has this function.

    So, you may use bq25703A's BATFET plus the bq297x's discharge FET. Please check bq297x team (gas gauge) to see if bq297x can support the discharge FET only or not.
