BQ76920: Companion Controller Need

Part Number: BQ76920
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350-R1, BQ78350

Hi,

I am planning to use BQ76920 for a 3-series cell application and I don't need any monitoring or register feature. I choose it because of cell balancing feature. Do I still need to use companion controller?

Best regards,

  • yes, a controller is needed to setup the balance registers( CELLBAL1, CELLBAL2) inside of the AFE(bq769x0) family. The controller can write to the AFE registers via the i2C. The EVMs have bq78350-R1(gauge) and the balancing algo is given in the bq78350 data manual.
    hope this helps out.

You are saying that without bq78350-R1, I can't use balancing feature. Is it contain both internal and external balancing? Because I use it just for 3-series cells application and I don't think I use external balancing.

  • Hi,

Let me clarify. You need an MCU OR bq78350 not both, but you need one or the other. The bq769x0 Monitors do not work by themselves.

    Thanks
