BQ78350: evaluation software for bq78350

Part Number: BQ78350
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76940, , BQSTUDIO, BQEVSW

Hi,

Iam using bq78350 along with bq76940 IC for 25.9V/20.8Ah battery. We are trying to configure SMbus slave address for the parallel connected batteries. Can we change the default address by connecting the SMBA pin to VCC? Also we could not find the evaluation software for bq78350 IC instead we are finding only bq76940 evaluation software. Please send me a link for bq78350 evaluation software.

Thanks & Regards

  • Hi,
Please anybody send me the link for bq78350 evaluation software.

  • You can change the SMBus address on the bq78350 device. Information on this is covered in the TRM and datasheet. The bqStudio setup program can be downloaded from the bq78350 product website.
  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have already installed bqstudio setup for bq20z95 IC to read 4 cell battery. It works good. Now Iam using bq78350 IC for 7 cell battery. The bqstudio setup shows only voltages of 4 cells instead of 7 cells. The setup does not identify bq78350 also. I need exact bqstudio setup for bq78350 IC. When Iam trying to download from the product website, I got software of bq76940 IC. Please send me the bqstudio setup for Bq78350.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Could you send a screenshot of the GUI? The bqStudio program does not support the bq20z95, so there may be confusion as to which tool you are using. The bq20z95 uses the older bqEVSW program, where the bq78350 uses bqStudio. Also, I forgot to mention earlier about SMBus address. While you can configure different SMBus addresses for the bq78350, I think that the bqStudio tool only supports SMBus address 16.

  • Hi,

I have attached the GUI screenshot which I used for bq20z95 IC.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi,

When I was trying to download bqstudio software I found the attached file.

  • The screenshot is for the older bqEVSW program and it does not support the bq78350 device. You indicated that you submitted a request to download bqStudio. Did you have issues with downloading it and getting it set up?
  • Hi,

Yes Iam facing a problem in downloading the file from the link I have sent. I have an issue with configuring the SMBUS address. I have connected the SMBA pin to VCC. But we can't read the data from the host controller. I have also tried by connecting an external resistor divider network with a voltage of 0.5V on SMBA pin but this method also doesn't worked for us. At this configuration what should be the status and connection of ADREN pin? Please send me how to configure the SMBUS address for bq78350.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Sometimes virus filters affect downloads. Could you try using a different computer to download the setup file?

Connecting SMBA to VSS should force the SMBus address to 16. I would concentrate on getting bqStudio to work and try communicating with the device using this program. After that, you can try changing the SMBus address. Make sure that the SMB Configuration [FIXED_ADDR] is set "0" to enable SMBA and ADREN. Apply a voltage to SMBA per the SMBA Pin Voltage table in the TRM and reset the device. This should change the SMBus address. If you use a resistor divider to apply voltage to SMBA, then you can use a low-side FET to only switch the resistors on when the device needs them. The ADREN pin will control the gate of the FET at the appropriate time.
  • Hi,
Thanks for your quick responses. We have applied resistor divider network between VCC, SMBA, VSS directly. The ADREN pin was left open as I'm not controlling the resistor divider. I was unable to read the address on SMBA other than 16 and 17. Is that compulsory to use ADREN pin or can be left open when configuring SMBA pin address at different voltages other than VCC/VSS? What is [FIXED_ADDR] is meant by?

    Thanks & Regards
