BQ76920EVM: My Battery Evaluation board not working , error : no acknowledgement from device ??

Part Number: BQ76920EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350

My BMS Board is not responding now to the communication from the battery studio , i found it has smbus line burned i corrected it but still it is not working and still how to troubleshoot the board ??

why these lines burned in the first place ???

The Part of board that is repaired.

  • Hi Ram,
Traces on PC boards burn because too much current goes through them. It is not normal for the SMB traces to carry any significant current or burn. The schematic for the board and component layout are shown in the EVM user guide. You will need to determine what the signal is and why current went through the trace. Improper or unexpected connections are a common cause. The SMB lines are referenced to BATT- on the EVM. If connection of the board references these lines to PACK- they can carry current during fault. With low side switching as used on the EVM referencing equipment to both BATT- and PACK- can put current through the equipment and connected interfaces if the FETs protect.
If current went through the trace it likely went through some components also. You will need to check each component attached to the net for proper function.
Use basic troubleshooting techniques. For this board in general:
    1. Check for shorts on the supply
    2. Apply normal voltage and look for unusual current. The resistor divider and a current limited supply would be recommended.
    3. Check that REGOUT voltage is low before boot and 2.5V after boot. Again look for abnormal currents.
    4. Check that REGOUT reaches GGPWR for the bq78350
    5. Check that the SMB lines are pulled up by the interface and that signaling from the interface reaches the IC.
