TPS25944A: Recommendation for hot-swap controller

Part Number: TPS25944A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25942A

Hi,

We are designing a backplane system into which multiple cards will be hot-plugged into the system.

The backplane provides 12V DC to the daughter cards via the backplane interface connector (cPCI).

Each daughter card has different load current requirements like 0.45A, 1.5A, 2.6A.

Let me know whether we can go with the TPS2594x series and advice me which particular variant of this series can be used.

I tried to check using the WEBENCH. But unable to view the design recommendation by the tool. Please advice.

Thank you.

  • Hi Sridevi,

    Thanks for reaching out!
I suggest to consider TPS25940A device. It has +/-8% current limit accuracy and programmable overvoltage protection.
what is the total capacitance on each daughter card?

    Best Regards,
    Rakesh
  • Thanks Rakesh for the suggestion.
Any specific reason for choosing TPS25940A instead of TPS25944A which I had chosen?
I find almost the specification of both identical. Please clarify.

With respect to the load capacitance it shall be close to 300uF nominally.

Also guide me whether WEBENCH tool supports these hot swap controllers.
    Thank you.
  • Hi Sridevi,

Most of the specifications are similar expect in over current response.
TPS25940A/ TPS25942A starts regulating the output current above the set current limit where as TPS25944A allows transient load for fault timer period of 4ms. Please look at Table 1 in TPS25944A datasheet for more information.

These device supports WEBENCH simulation, design. You can find them on right side bottom of product pages
