BQ20Z80A-V110: absolute capacity and remaining capacity stop decrementing at ~20%SOC

We are having trouble with the gas gauging accuracy on the BQ20Z80 V1.10. It appears that on discharge that the absolute capacity and relative capacity both stop decrementing at ~20% SOC even though I can still get that ~20% out of the pack before the BMS opens the discharge FETs. It will then recalibrate and adjust to 0% after resting. We have tried a couple times to follow the SLA334B to help with the accuracy issues and make a golden file. The trouble is that the 3 calibration cycles do not appear to be helping the issue. We can see that after the 2 hour rest once the pack is charged and the 5 hour rest once the pack is discharge that the recalibration occurs; however it continually stops decrementing at ~20% on relative capacity and adjusting later. Something else we noticed is that the relative capacity ~20% is right around 3.48-3.5V/cell. Another data point is the QMAX values appear to be updating with each cycle as they are suppose to when making a golden file.

  • what does the gauge update the max error to? what about update status? You will need to make sure you are using the correct chem id. Verify this using our tool gpcchem on ti.com. Furthermore, you need to successfully carry out a learning cycle before the gauge can be accurate. Upon completion of a learning cycle, update status will be 06. see section 2.4 of the attached app note

    finally, why are you using the bq20z80. it is really old and not recommended for new designs. A replacement gauge would be the bq40z50-R2

  • update status is "06". It was reset to "00" and then we sent the IT config command to start the learning process. The update status was "04" after sending IT command, then went to "05" after charging and recalibration, then it went to "06" after discharging and recalibration. The max error is "1%". We have completed almost 3 cycles (final discharge will be done today) that the SLA334B recommends so it should be accurate by now. The chemistry is 0100 which we have been using since the product that uses the BQ20Z80 was designed and have not seen this issue before. The BQ20Z80 is being used on a current design and hopefully we can soon rev it to use a more current BMS chip; however I need to find a cause or work around for the gas gauge accuracy issue for the current design.
  • So are you saying that this problem occurred on a device that has been in use for a while or this is on a brand new pack? Do you have a log and gg file from this pack exhibiting this behavior for analysis?

  • We use our current BMS design on several different battery packs. This customer in particular has also used battery packs in the past with this BMS in it and the gas gauging was working fine for them. It is only a recent design which matched another configuration series and parallel but had a different form factor (the other configuration was a longer slimmer pack where this one is a smaller bulkier design) that is having this issue with the gas gauging. We even used the same configuration file from the other configuration for this pack since there was not any change electrically. I have .gg files (see attached) for the end of each cycle while we were trying to create the golden file.

  • I was not logging using the TI software so I don't have a log file. We did log data but it is in a different format and I don't think it is going to give you all the information you want.
