BQ27530EVM: bqEVSW startup issues

Part Number: BQ27530EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQEVSW, BQSTUDIO

Trying to evaluate the BQ27530 using the EV2300 and BQ27530EVM. But, getting communication errors.

I contacted the Ti Chat and they were unable to make progress, so suggested I post here.

I have tried using BQSTUDIO and the bqEVSW software. But neither is working. Initially I had trouble with the EV2300 drivers but, I believe they are now installed OK. I get the Windows BEEP when I plug and unplug the USB and Device Manager is no longer showing any issues.

The EVM is also attached on USB cable. But, I don't get a Windows BEEP when I plug/unplug the EVM.

I have tried with battery attached and power supply and the I2C between the EV2300 and the EVM.

The error I am getting is "No communication with EVM Gas Gauge could be established."

Per the suggestion in the dialog, I do have a battery attached. The battery has 3.7V. So, I believe the apply power comment has been satisfied.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • hello,
Did you set up the gauge as discussed in the EVM user guide below?
    www.ti.com/.../sluua09b.pdf

-pls carefully follow the instructions on setting up the EVM>
-Secondly can you make sure sure you have the jumperJp4 at the on postion to enable the chip?
-thirdly, measure in voltage on VCC pin and see if it measures about 2.5V. If there is no voltage on the pin then it means the IC is either not receiving power or it is damaged and would need to be replaced.

    thanks

  • This is how I have the setup:

    PC -> USB -> EV2300, I2C to J14 on EVM

On EVM all jumpers in the DEFAULT positions as recommended in the procedure.

Battery connected to the PACK+ and PACK- with thermistor.

    6V power applied to J1/J3.

USB from EVM to PC. (Is that CORRECT?)

But, I did not have a resistive load across SYS/GND.

I don't have volt meters or current meters installed at this time. All volt meter connections are open and current meters are effectively shorted.

It was confusing to follow the instructions. They recommend using BQQtudio but that failed. Then, I was told to use the bqEVSW. I tried running both software. The BQSTUDIO states that 'This device is not compatible with the application...'

You state that I should make JP4 in the ON position. It is NOT. It's in the DEFAULT position which I believe is OFF. Per the instructions in the UM.

TP9 is ~0.0V wrt GND with battery open-circuit. or battery hooked-up.

I removed the USB on the EVM (EV2300 still has USB). The s/w still fails to find the device.

    Thanks

  • David,
set Jp5 which is the enable for the gauge to on. I mistook jp4 for jp5. however, evm user guide states jp4 should be set to on as well for normal operation.
    thanks
