BQ24630: maximum charge current for bq24630

Part Number: BQ24630

Hello-

We would like to use the bq24630 to charge 2 packs of LiFePO4 (each 4S6P) using a single charger IC. The desired charge current is 14A. Is this possible?

If so could you recommend a circuit? I

f not, why not, and  could you recommend an alternative part?

Thanks and Best Regards,

  • you can use a lower value of sense resistor to achieve higher charge current. However, charge current accuracy is based on the voltage across the sense resistor. Thus the charge current regulation accuracy can be worse at the same current level.

Since your battery pack is 4s6p, and bq24630 can only support up to 7s battery voltage. You can only connect your 2 battery pack in parallel.

However, we do not typically recommend to use bq246xx at higher than 10A, since thermal performance on the charging path can be too hot.

  • Hi Jing-

The LTC4015 does not seem to have this problem. It shows up to 15A for charging LiFePO4. I guess I'm wondering why the charging path gets too hot for your device, since the path does not include the BQ24630? Can't we just use large package/low Ron FETs to handle the higher current?

    Thanks,
    -Tim
  • Yes you can. You can also increase the current trace for better thermal as well. What I mean is you can achieve 14A, however, thermal needs to be take into consideration carefully with such higher current in single path.
