TPS65381A-Q1: Can TPS65381A be used for TMS570LC4357?

Part Number: TPS65381A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS570LC4357,

 Hello guys,

One of our customers is looking for PMIC for TMS570LC4357. It seems that TPS65381A can be used for TMS570. But TMS570LC4357 is high end model in TMS570 series and the device consumption current is higher than other TMS570 series.

So my questions are the follow and could you please give me your answer?

Q1. Can TPS65381A be used for TMS570LC4357 without additional part?

Q2. If the answer for Q1 is no, could you please tell me any solution you recommend?

 Your reply would be appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya Nakai.

  • Hello,
thank you for posting your question on the TPS65381-A in the e2e forum. Your question has been assigned to the expert within TI, who will reply to you as soon as possible.

    Best regards,
    Eran.
  • Hi Nakai-san,

A1:  Yes, the TPS65381A-Q1 can be used with all TMS570 devices, however as you noted the more recent, higher performance devices may require more core current than the VDD1 LDO controller can provide or even a cascaded DCDC from VDD6 to provide the core current could provide. The device architecture is flexible to allow a couple of other options linked to your Q2.

A2:  There are two basic options depending on how much core current you need.  If the core current needed and efficiency of a cascaded DCDC buck regulator is low enough they may be powered from the VDD6 pre-regulator.  If the core current and efficiency of a DCDC buck regulator will cause too much loading to VDD6 then the a wide VIN buck could be used from the main source.  In both cases the VDD1_SENSE pin is used to monitor the core rail in the same method it monitors the VDD1_LDO controller output.  Attached is a PDF explaining these options in more details.

  • Hi Scott,
Thank you very much for your reply.
This my question may be a basic question but could you please tell me how our customer can know the core consumption current in the their case? It is by actual measurement? Or is there any calculation tool?

    Thank you and best regards,
    Kazuya Nakai.
  • Hi Nakai-san,

There are a couple of options:
    1) measurements
    2) I'm not sure if the TMS570 team has scaling tables for the current consumption vs clock frequency or other options in the TMS570 datasheets for the specific device. If not maybe the TMS570/Hercules forum can help if they have data on clock frequency or peripheral use with respect to core current consumption.

    Best Regards,
    Scott
  • Hi Scott,

Thank you for your reply. I will ask it in the TM570 forum.
