BQ40Z50-R1: Fuel Gauge without MOSFET

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24171,

Hi

I'm designing a system with 3S - LiPo battery. I'm using BQ24171 as a battery charger and system power path. My question is as the battery charger control charge/discharge current and voltage, Can I ommit the Mosfet in BQ40Z50-R1 side?

I'm only intrested in battery gauge and cell balancing feature of BQ40Z50-R1. Will BQ40Z50-R1 measure SoC correctly if I remove the control FETs?

  • The bq40z50-R1 can provide gauging and cell balancing without FET control. You will need to disable the CFETF and DFETF protection features to prevent these faults from occurring.

Thanks for your reply, Do I need to set CFETF and DFETF to 0 for one time or it need to set on each power on reset?

Also in this architecture, does battery suffer from any damage due to removing FET?

  • You will just have to set the CFETF and DFETF bits to 0 one time. This architecture will prevent the gauge from protecting the battery from current, temperature and voltage fault conditions, so those could result in damage to the cells if the protection is not implemented with other circuitry.
