bq24005: heating issue

Part Number: BQ24005

hi all,

i have been trying to build 2cell li-ion BMS with BQ24005...it is charging properly but the ic is heating while battery is charging and discharging..

and this is my circuit,

can you please tell me the solution for this problem.

  • The circuit looks OK. The problem may be in the charging current and voltage dropped across the device. The bq24005 is a linear charging and current is set to 1A with only a 1V drop across the device power dissipation is 1W. It is very easy for the dissipation to be higher.
When the device is overheating what is the input to output voltage drop and current?

A couple of things to look at:
1.) Thermal Pad connections to the PCB, is a lot of copper area provided for spreading the heat from device to PCB? See data sheet Thermal Info page 17
2.) Input voltage is the listed a 9V, is it possibly higher?
3.) Can charging current be reduced from 1A to a lower value?
