BQ34Z100: IC failures - internal short circuit between REG25 and VSS

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE

Hello

We are using the BQ34Z100-G1 in a battery management system.  During our initial product testing, we have seen a small number of BQ34Z100-G1 ICs fail, and upon investigation have found the ICs to have failed internally with a short circuit between REG25 and VSS.

Our design includes an external thermistor connected between REG25 and TS.

Can anyone offer any advice as to what may be the cause of these failures?

Thanks

Dan Farrelly

  • Hi Dan,
Ensure you are not exceeding the max input voltage on your regin pin. Check the output cap on the Reg25 pin and make sure it is a 1uF cap on there. Ensure your chip circuitry has some ESD protetction on the pins that are output outside of the pack. Also, ensure your reg in pin has the 0.1uF cap.
    thanks

  • Hi Dan,
The most probable cause would be an ESD strike. You could send a couple of devices for failure analysis back to TI, they may be able to locate where the electrical over stress happened and if there is any other failure on the device.
