LM3401EVAL: 3.5A application

Part Number: LM3401EVAL

Hi

We are referring SNVA254C user guide.

We want to use AN-1657 for 3.5A application.  

An example BOM is listed in user guide.

Can't default LM3401EVAL support 3.5A application?

Should we make custom board referring Table 3 of user guide for 3.5A application?

    Hello,

    The default board cannot support 3.5A as it is. The inductor saturation current rating is too low, the FET Rds(on) is too high and current rating too low, and the diode current rating is too low. The inductor would saturate and blow the FET most likely. A SOT-23 FET will also likely not be capable thermally.

    To get 3.5A you will need to base it on the 3.5A BOM as its components have the correct ratings.

    Even if 3A application, it is reasonable to refer BOM list shown in Table 3 for 3.5A application. Is it correct?

    And is there other thing to be cared by user to using BOM for 3.5A application?

    Hello,

    Yes, that is correct. When this board was developed I am sure the 3.5A application was tested or it would not be in the user's guide. So it should work fine with that BOM.
