bq2000: Charge circuit question

I am designing in the BQ2000 device and I am not sure what part of the circuit in the datasheet does. On page 10 of the datasheet I would like to know what Q2, D5, C9 are for. A similar circuit is used in the EVM (Q2, D5, R12, C9) for this device and also in another app note. Please advise what this circuitry is for and operation

bq2000 is a legacy part without any document to give the detail. So, please don't change it or you can do full evaluation for your new gate drive circuit.

Do I need to worry about this device going End Of Life? If so can you recommend an alternative?

I am charging a single lithium ion battery or 3 NIMH cells in series. I need to have the voltage sense separate from the current sense pins due to the configuration of my battery.
