Output capacitor

Hi

I am not able to get what is the use of output capacitor in DC-DC or switching regulator.

If I say that it is to make the ripple low but then why it is required for LDO ?
Because any way the LDO has low ripple then why we use output capacitor in LDO?

Thanks

Asj

  • For a switching regulator such as a buck converter, the output at the switching node is an approximately square wave pulse train with the required duty cycle so that the average value is the desired output voltage. The output LC filter is a low pass filter that removes the high frequency components and leaves the DC output voltage. For LDOs, most require some output capacitor fro stability.
