Power management solution for Li-Pol battery backup

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24075, BQ24073

I have designed a security camera system powered via DC adapter and I need to add a battery backup. Unfortunately there is a huge number of products and I have a difficulty in finding the right one for this application.

System specifications:

  • 5V SYS input voltage
  • 3-4W average power consumption, 6W peak (3s max)
  • 1S Li-Pol battery 1500 - 2000mAh
  • It is not space constrained device - solution doesn't have to be small

Power management requirements:

  • Battery charging + system power
  • Signaling of connected/disconnected DC input (battery backup signaling)
  • Battery under-voltage and short-circuit protection
  • Low battery indicator

Battery will not be used on regular basis so the circuit does not have to be really advanced. Battery is present just so the system is functional during the power loss event. (max 4x per year) Total solution cost is more important than long battery life and small footprint.

Could you please recommend a products that will fulfill the requirements?

Thank you.

  • Hello,
I'll suggest looking into the BQ24075. It can charge the battery to 4.2V with up to 1.6A input current into the charger. It is a power path device which means that it prioritizes the load if the input current can't support the load and battery charging requirements. Since the output voltage is 5.5V, you'll need to use a buck converter to get the 5V output for your system. However, the input will have to be above 5.5V. If your input isn't above 5.5V, you can use the BQ24073/4 which has an output voltage of 4.4V along with a boost converter.
