BQ40Z50-R1: bqProduction and bq40z50-R1

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQPRODUCTION, BQSTUDIO, , BQMTESTER

E2E team,

After a few months hiatus, I am once again attempting to resurrect my "universal" programmer using the HPA495 and the bqProduction software.

Conditions are as follow:

HPA495 is mounted in an enclosure with all the I/O brought out to connectors on the box.

EV2300 is version 3.1m.

I am using the bqProduction, installer 1.0.9, dated 4/4/16.

bqProduction opens up, but does not detect a "Cal Board Found" when the Search for Connected Boards function is executed on the bqProduction.

Can someone please help me with debugging my system?

  • Hi George,
Are you following the instructions step by step listed in bqproduction manual? Is your bq40z50-R1 having the system present flag set with the sys pres pin pulled to ground. Did you ensure you wake the bq40z50-R1 from shut down mode. Also ensure that you do not have an instance of bqstudio running when trying to use bqproduction.

    thanks
    Onyx
  • Referencing you 4 questions:

    1) Could you please point me to the documentation that encompasses the bqProduction user's manual? The only documentation I have been able to find is a rather sketchy PowerPoint presentation.

    2) System Present is set (/PRES pin is pulled to ground).

    3) how do you wake the bq40z50-R1 from shutdown mode if you cannot communicate with it?

    4) No, I do not have bqStudio running when I start bqProduction.

  • 5140.Taking your fuel gauge from design to production.pdfHi George,

    3. A charger voltage has to be applied to pack pin to wake the gauge from shutdown mode.

    1. Sorry i thought there was a usual guide somewhere but in looking i can 't see to find one. see if the attached ppt helps you some. Also, there is a user guide for the bqMtester hardware for setup guidiance. The user guide for the bqproduction tool is in the "help" section when you start up the tool.

    thanks

  • Hi Onyx,

re: item 3 - does this voltage to wake up the chip have to be applied manually each time the programming is run? I know that using the HPA169 tester and the bqMTester, all you need to do is put a pre-programmed board into the tester and it automatically wakes up and recognizes the "known good board".
  • Hi George
The bqMtester does this. But you need to make sure the gauge is indeed awake incase your hardware Mbqmters isn't applying the voltage needed. You can test if the chip is awake by connecting the gauge to your computer using ev2300 and starting bqstudio. If the gauge is indeeed awake, it will be automatically detected.
    thanks

  • I believe that this is the problem - the bqMtester is not supplying the power to the board.  Putting the board on a test fixture with power supply attached, I can wake up the board.  However, when I transfer it to the bqMTester setup, power to the board is lost and the board goes back to sleep.  I think I need help in troubleshooting the HPA495 setup.

  • Hi George,
Did you have a any luck getting your board to work? Let me know so i can have someone from that team look into helping you trouble shoot the board.

    thanks
    Onyx
  • So far, no luck. I don't seem to be getting the I2C input to turn on the  supply to the PCBA.  I have tried several different EV2300 modules with the same result, so I don't think that is the problem.

It would help very much if I could actually speak with one of your tech gurus to help me troubleshoot my HPA495.

    Thanks

  • No input from tech gurus, but I did find my problem(s).

Note that even the most up-to-date EV2300 doesn't work if your USB connection on your computer is unreliable.
