MOSFET or BJT for switching applications

That is a good question. It really depends on your end application. Generally, when you need higher performance (lower on resistance, faster switching, lower switching losses), a MOSFET is the preferred choice.

When cost is the only consideration, and you just need a small signal transistor to pass along a signal, sometimes a BJT is the more economical choice.

The MOSFETs fast turn on and off has made them the preferred choice for most switch mode power supplies these days, particularly those applications pushing to higher frequencies and demanding higher efficiencies.

IGBTs are often used for higher voltage (>600V) and low frequency applications (<50kHz) like AC/DC motors for white goods and other appliances.
