TPS659037: SMPS1/2 and SPMS4/5 with dual coupled inductors vs separate individual inductors

Part Number: TPS659037
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5728,

Hi,

a customer is trying to use dual coupled inductors with SMPS1/2 and SMPS4/5 supplies to save board space. The EVM designs with AM5728 are using individual inductors.

Design:

AM5728 EVM

Is that design choice ok?

Regards,

  • Hello Gunter,

We haven't tested the device with coupled inductors, but I don't see any reason they could not be used. You or the customer should make sure to test that it is still stable, but it looks like it should work, as long as the inductors meet the other specs like inductance, Isat, IDC, etc.

Note that the TPS659037 buck output inductance is specified at 0.7uH to 1.3uH. So Please make sure the inductors have tight enough tolerance that it will always be at least 0.7uH. The 0.821uH inductors shown may be a bit too low.

    Regards,
    Karl
