TPS63031: Maximum current output in failure mode

Hi,

We are considering this component, TPS63031, in our design in order to step down the voltage from 3.7V to 3.3V (Buck mode operation). 

In order to achieve regulatory compliance, we will need to know the maximum current draw in failure mode. I understand that in normal operation, the maximum current is 800 mA, but we need to know if component failure would result in changes to maximum current draw. Please advise if an FMEA has been done to determine the maximum current draw.

  • You can find the maximum average switch current in the electrical characteristics table of the datasheet (1100mA). At normal conditions this is the maximum average input current the device will draw from the power source.
    If the device is damaged it depends on the damage whether it is still capable of controlling anything like limiting current. Typical failures can also be failures in assembly causing shorts due to bad soldering. There will be no current limit if the input voltage is shorted to GND with solder between the VIN pad and the exposed thermal pad which typically is connected to GND.
    Basically it depends on the failure modes you need to cover for your specific regulatory compliance whether any built in protection feature can offer suitable protection.
