BQ34Z100-G1: BQ34z100-g1. Voltage Calibration error

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, EV2400, BQ34Z100EVM

Hi,

I am using a BQ34z100-g1 with an 8s2p LiFePO4 batteries. I have created a golden image and load it in all the devices.

However I am having problems with the voltage calibration. Most of the time I try to calibrate voltage battery I obtain the following error "Calibration-Calibration cell voltage entered is out of range. The value is in millivolts. Please check value and retry"

I am using EV2400 version 0.18 and bqStudio 1.3.54.1 and I ma not having problems calibrating current or temperature.

1. What can be happening with voltage calibration?

Thank you very much in advance,

  • Hi Gorka
v1.3.54 is broken for calibration the bq34xxx devices. Pls use the test 1.3.76 on ti.com and follow the instructions for calibrating in the EVM user guide.

    thanks
    Onyx
  • Hi Onyx,

I have downloaded the version 1.3.76 and still have the same problem as you can see in the following images

    1. What can be hapenning?

    Thank you,

  • Hi Gorka
It appears you haven't followed the instructions in the user guide. Can you describe your process of calibration?
    thanks
    Onyx
  • Hi Onyx,

First of all I have loaded the firmware in the BQ34z100-g1 (obtained from here ).

After that I have laoded the correct chemistry and modified parameters of BQ34z100-g1 such as pack configuration a, b and c (0x29a4, 0xa6, 0x27), cell charge voltages, flash update OK cell voltage (=2250mV),...I cannot export the gg.csv file with this new bqStudio version, this program is very very dissapointing.

And then I have gone to the calibration screen and first try to calibrate the voltage. However it has been imposible to achieve it. Always the same message, showed in the following image.

I have tried to enter the total voltage of the battery and the cell voltage but both times the answer has been the same.

    1. What am I doing in a wrong way?

    Thank you,

  • Hi Gorka
Did you set the number of cells and set VOLTSEL flag in pack config A register as described in the user guide, section 3.2.1?

    http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluu904a/sluu904a.pdf

    thanks
    Onyx

  • Hi Onyx,

Yes, I write the number of cells (=8; I have checked it by reading data memory and is ok) and set VOLTSEL (I configure pack config A = 0x29a4).

I do not know what is happening but it is very frustating not to be able to calibrate the voltage.

I have tried to modified manually the volatge divider parameter and then the thing goes right but this is only a work around, not a solution to my problem.

    Thanks,

  • Gorka,
A couple of things that you can check are:
    1) If you are using the bq34z100EVM, make sure that the voltage jumper is in the 32V position. If you are using your own design, then make sure that the voltage divider is set correctly.
    2) Make sure that Impedance Track is not enabled and that the gauge is not Sealed.

    TEC
  • Hi TEC,

I am using bq34z100EVM. I have checked those things:
    1. The voltage jumper is 32V position.
    2. Impodance Track is not enable as I have just load the devide firmware (I can check it with learned status and update status, both are 0x00)

    Any other suggestion?

    Thanks,
  • Hi Gorka,
Pls confirm what firmware version is on your device. is it the g1 version which you downloaded from bqstudio.
when you started bqstudio is itable to automatically detect the device and start up without any issues? Can you send a screen shot of your bqstudio screen with the dash board showing clearly?
    thanks
    Onyx
  • Hi Onyx,

Yes, I have loaded g1 version, but not from bqStudio, I have downloaded it from TI webpage (

    ).

When I start the bqStudio the first time in the day and select the bq34z100-g1, I always obtain the same screen (selected device not compatible with this application). If I close and start it again without having turn off the computer this message does not appear.

I push OK button to continue and the bqStudio starts with any other problem.

Now in the dashboard I can check that bq34z100-g1 version is the correct version (0.16) and bqStudio is the 1.3.76. Yo can see both in the following image

And now I try to calibrate voltage. Fist of all I introduce the battery cell voltage with the following result

After that I try introducing the battery voltage but the result is the same

What do you think it is happening, Onyx?

    Thank you,

  • Nobody knows how to solve this problem?

  • Hi Gorka,

Try playing around with the cell count value and the update voltage. Please provide your SREC, so we can provide better guidance.

  • Hi Damian,

What do you mean with "Try playing around with the cell count value" ?

I attach the .srec file of my bq34z100-g1 in case it were useful to solve this problem. (its extension is rename to .txt for be allowed to send the file)

  • Hi Gorka,

Ensure your Configuration>>Registers>>Number of series cell is set to 8. Also the issue is your bqStudio version 1.3.54.1. Please upgrade to version 1.3.76 Build 3.

    www.ti.com/.../BQSTUDIO
  • Hi Damian,

You can see in my previous answer that my bqStudio is 1.3.76 Build 3 (don not see the first post of the threat, now we are in the second page but you can find in the firt page posts where I show the actual bqStudio I have installed).

I have also check that number of series cell is 8.

    Any other ideas?
  • Hi Gorka,

I went off your last post. I tested your settings and conditions with both 1.3.54.1 and 1.3.76 build 3. 1.3.54.1 didn't work, but 1.3.76 build 3 worked.

Please keep your current settings in your last post with 1.3.54.1 and use use 1.3.76 build 3.
  • Here's the srec I used and configured for my EVM board to perform calibration.

  • Hi Gorka,

When you upgraded from version 1.3.54.1 to 1.3.76, did you install over the previous installation?

Please make sure you're using the up to date bqz file for the device as there was an issue with the bqz file distributed with the 1.3.54.1 version that has since been fixed in the 1.3.76 build 3 version.

    Please try either/both:
    A) Reinstallation
    1. Fresh install of bqStudio 1.3.76 build 3

    B) Fixing the File for bqStudio 1.3.54.1
    1. Download this specific 16 version of the bqz file (I realize you have downloaded it from the site previously, but lets try with a fresh version) located here: e2e.ti.com/.../2577.0100_5F00_0_5F00_16_2D00_bq34z100G1.bqz
    2. Rename/remove the prexisting bqz file in C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config
    3. Place the freshly download bqz file in C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config

Please let me know if this solves your issue.

If the issue persists, it is often due to the voltage divider not being set properly in the software.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
  • Hi Bryan,

I have formatted my PC only two weeks ago so I am pretty sure that only 1.3.76 build3 version has been installed on it.

That is why I skipped your first step (A) and went directly to the second step (B). Change the bqz file and ¡surprise! now it works :-)

I will keep you informed about the performance with others device.

    Thank you very much,

    Best regards,
