300W PCI-Express OR-ing and current limit solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS24740, LM5050-1, TPS2412, TPS24770

Do you have any solution for 300W PCI-Express input stage?

300W PCI input stage is separated to 3 inputs, it is 12V, 150W, 75W and 66W.

Our customer would like to integrate these 3 inputs, and they would like to get 290W.

We think OR-ing and current limit solution for this concept. Do you have any solution?

  • Hi Kohei
    Thanks for posting the question, let me get back on this soon.

  • Kari-san,

    Thank you for your reply.
    How is the progress? Do you have any solution?

  • Hi Kohei,

    TPS24740 support both ORing and hotswap control (current limit) on the same device.

    Three of them would work for 12V PCI express application in the below configuraiton.

    OR --> HotSwap |

                                |

    OR --> HotSwap |  --> Load

                                |

    OR --> HotSwap  |

    But however, other approach is to seperate ORing control and hot swap control as shown below.

    Here LM5050-1 is the candidate for if voltage support beyond 16V is required, or TPS2412 can be used upto 16V.

    For Hotswap, TPS24770 can be used.

    OR --> |

                |

    OR --> |  --> HotSwap --> Load

                |

    OR --> |

    Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Regards,

    Kari.

  • Kari-san,

    Thank you for your reply.
    I think constant current limit function is required for this solution.
    Each 12V line is not same voltage level, and there is possibility that large current flow from one line. In this case, this line voltage level is down and start flowing current from other line.
    Finally, we have to get 300W power.

    In above operation, we cannot get full power if Hotswap FET becomes off by current limit detection.

    What do you think about this my opinion?
    If this is correct, I think we cannot use your Hotswap solution.

    Do you have any composition example of 300W PCI power input stage?
