TIDA-01093: Some question about 20S Applications Reference Design(TIDA-01093)

Part Number: TIDA-01093
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930,

Dear

After checking the TIDA-01093 document , it seems that in this design the two AFE (bq76930) are independent to MCU.

Does it mean that i need to do cell balance procedure for individual AFE when i found the difference of voltage in AFE1 and AFE2 is very huge.

Is there any document which describe this aspect?

thanks a lot

  • Hi Frank,
The MCU must control balancing, the method available is passive balancing where each cell can be balanced down or charged at a slower rate than the others when it is enabled for balancing. Of course an appropriate pattern must be selected during balancing operation to avoid overstress of the inputs.
One method would be to consider all the cell voltages for balancing and balance down the high cells. Another would be to balance each AFE group, then check the difference between the AFEs and balance the high one down if needed. Every other cell on the higher AFE would be the maximum recommended balancing method. I don't believe there is any documentation on this, it is up to the firmware developer.
