Hello,

I am attempting to setup bqMTester (HPA495) for automatic programming and calibration of the bq40z50-r1. The user guide (SLUU397A) does not appear to have been updated for this application and so I'm having some trouble.

1. Generate ROM File per SLUU397A - 4.2.1:

The bq40z50-r1 is not compatible with bqEASY in bqEVSW or TesterDFReader. What is the correct procedure to generate a ROM file for this fuel gauge?

2. StationSetup.exe Unlock Configuration per SLUU397A - 4.4:

Password entry "bq20z80" results in "Incorrect Password". Is this an incorrect password?

In addition to the questions I've posed above, it would be helpful to have general guidance on how to approach this setup, especially if it must deviate from the given user manual.

Hi Michael,
You are using the wrong software. Bqproduction is what works with the bqMtester for the bq40z50. Pls use that instead

The original bqMtester software tools do not support the bq40z50-R1 device, but the bqMtester board is still used. The bqProduction software tool was released as an option for production programming and calibration for this device. Here is an e2e posting that provides a document that may help.

How should I approach configuration for a 2s pack? Is the cell configuration within the 'Calibration type' file?

The program allows you to set the cell1, batt and pack voltages. You don’t have to select the number of series cells. You will have to short the appropriate terminals on the cell voltage connector.

Could you please elaborate? Shorting CELL 3 or 4 on TB3 /4 does not appear to reduce the PACK + voltage.

Reducing the number of series cells does not affect the PACK voltage on the bqMTester board. Probably the safest thing to do would be to not short the cells on the bqMTester board and make the appropriate connections from the board to the cell contacts on your module. If you were using the bq40z50EVM, then you will need to short out the contacts for Cells 3 and 4 on the EVM. You can connect PACK+ on your module to CELL2+ on the bqMTester board and this should provide a good reference for calibration.

I am not using the bq40z50EVM module, rather connecting directly to cell contacts on the PCBA. Your recommendation then is to short the UUT Pack+ contact to the UUT Cell 2+ contact by connecting both to the bqMtester Cell 2 + contact?

Yes, that should work. You should test it to verify.
